Working with the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center Institute for Postgraduate Education & Research (HMSDC), the Aviation and Occupational Medicine Unit, Wellington School of Medicine University of Otago New Zealand offers occupational medicine education in the Middle East. These Universities have established a Continuing Professional Development Programme for occupational medicine professionals in the wider Middle East, as well as providing Continuing Medical Education, leading to a Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine.
The occupational medicine Continuing Professional Development programme is based on regular one day seminars in Dubai, four days a year. These sessions will bring together occupational medical practitioners and academics from the region, together with current international speakers to provide a forum for best practice education and debate. This also provides excellent opportunities for occupational physicians to network with their colleagues across the region.
The occupational medicine Continuing Medical Education programme is based on Otago University’s internationally recognised Distance Learning programme. Otago University offers a two year, part time distance learning programme leading to a Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine. Students are eligible to enrol from any country in the Middle East region and beyond. Distance learning means that doctors can study for the DipOccMed while continuing to live and work in their normal locations, and absences from work for study are minimal. Course work is conducted through multi media electronic course-books mailed to students on DVD, which is the developed into a portfolio of learning with weekly updates, course handouts, audio conferences (which are recorded and can be re-visited), audio, video and multimedia learning materials. The first foundation year is based on two university papers AVMX 715 – Principles of Occupational Medicine and AVMX 716 – Clinical Aspects of Occupational Medicine
The second advanced year is based on specialist papers AVMX 723 – Managing Occupational Medicine and AVMX 724 – Health and Industry. Papers run from February to June and July to November each year. The Distance Teaching programme is a well established infrastructure operated co-operatively between the Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Universities in the region. Otago University’s extensive experience in distance teaching international students is matched by outstanding academic input from its partner universities. All involved tertiary educating organisations have on their staff some of the world’s leading academic lecturers, researchers and thinkers around the world, who will be also involved in the CPD and CME programmes.
Graduates from the Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine can choose to add four advanced degrees through further study and supervised research, again done at a distance and while remaining in the Middle East. Higher degrees include:
- Degree of Masters in Health Sciences endorsed in Occupational Medicine
Also see: Master of Health Sciences (MHealSc) - Doctor of Philosophy. Suitable candidates may elect to enrol for a PhD at Otago in an occupational medicine topic area. Supervision can be provided at a distance although some time spent at Otago or one of the partner University Medical Schools in the Middle East will be required for at least six months during the PhD research programme.
